Police officers have a zero tolerance policy toward people who make false police reports or provide false information in a police report. The crime is punishable as a first degree misdemeanor (punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of not more than $1,000). In order to justify an arrest, the officer must establish that the person gave false information and knew that the information was false at the time it was given.
